The British pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, has been named as the world’s largest exporter of Viagra and its generic versions of the drug. The decision was made on Friday in the first of five major medicines that are expected to go on sale in the coming months, the UK-based group said. Pfizer’s patent for Viagra expired in March this year, giving it the right to begin producing generic versions of the drug from its original patent, the European Union drug trade group said. “As part of Pfizer’s successful transition to a new pharmaceutical practice environment in the EU, the UK-based Pfizer said it has taken “a great step” in its efforts to become the first to produce generic Viagra. “It has already been recognised by the EU and by the European Commission in its patent application process and will continue to be so.”
Pfizer said its Viagra patent for a generic version of the drug was in the process of being valid from 1 December 2017 to 1 December 2018. It is the first generic drug to be licensed in the EU.
The company is the latest in a string of big- pharma developments aimed at bringing to market the first generic version of the drug that will be on sale in the UK.
In September, Pfizer said it would sell its UK-based generic version of Viagra to the European Commission. Pfizer said its Viagra patent was in the process of being valid from 1 December 2017 to 1 December 2018. It is the first generic to be licensed in the EU and the first to be marketed in the UK.
The European Commission, which has approved Viagra for patients with erectile dysfunction, has not yet approved generic versions of the drug.
A new generic version of Pfizer's Viagra is expected to be available in Europe, the UK’s health service regulator, the EU’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said on Friday. The decision by the British pharmaceutical giant is being taken after several European and European Commission meetings, including one in which Pfizer told the European Commission that it was considering a generic version of Viagra.
In addition, Pfizer said it is the first to make the drug available to the European Union. It said it will continue to market the product to the EU.
“We are very pleased that Pfizer is working with the European Commission and the MHRA to ensure that our UK patients can receive the drug,” a Pfizer spokeswoman said in an email. The spokeswoman said Pfizer was “helping to bring a product to the market for our patients that is as effective as possible and for which it is a good alternative”.
The pharmaceutical firm said it has taken a “great step” in its efforts to become the first to produce generic Viagra from its original patent. It is the first to manufacture Viagra by a UK company.

Viagra will be sold in Britain, the European Union’s health service regulator, following a review in September. Pfizer will continue to market its product to the EU.
The company said it had “several important factors” to look at when it decided to launch its Viagra patent.
